How old are his kids? I've seen little kids around big fuzzy things and fear is not usually one of their reactions.
I know you want to emphasize this, but it's reminding me uncomfortably of John Sublime from Marvel comics who exists solely to ensure humans hate and fear mutants whether it makes sense or not.
His kids are very young. They would have been toddlers at the time of him coming to Wolverton. Heck, I've known many kids frightened of Santa Claus. So a big freaky wolf like the villain in many fairy tales right there in your home?? Of course it would scare children. Not EVERY child, no, but there's no accounting for what scares whom.

I'm not trying to say that some kids aren't going to be scared, it just seems like there's a lot of "scared of/hate 'wolves" going around. It just seems like the John Sublime thing. I'm not suggesting that there's going to be a lot of 'wolf friendly stuff, but there being none outside Wolverton seems weird.
Well, that's the premise of the comic - they need their own town or be oppressed and hated. It wouldn't make sense to focus on werewolf lovers. In general, there's more fear of them than love. Don't forget that not all 'wolves out there will play nice. You don't go running up to bears even though they're cute. And for the record, I have never heard of John Sublime.

I know. I'm glad Oskar's family has accepted him as a 'wolf, even if he's likely to have troubles. I guess that being a 'wolf lover (and seeing so many fun and friendly ones), it's hard not to want to see more positive interactions with non-'wolfs.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to imply you had or this was exactly like it, only that it reminded me of it. Marvel comics tends to love the status quo and when societal attitudes start to change, so that the universal hate of mutants (especially after they save people) no longer makes much sense, they invent something so it'll always be there.
I think small kids would not recognise him as their papa. I remember when I was small a family friend whom I liked a lot went to do his military service. When I saw him in his outfit I freaked out. Very scary.

Just ask this poor wolf: Test of Courage - Kids Vs. Adults
According to one commentator, an adult can be heard advising the children "Be careful".

This guy isn't exactly a selfiedope, but he should have been more alert.
